Lake Forest College in Chicago, Illinois offers the Carnegie Writing Scholarship which awards between $1,000 and $5,000 per year.  To apply, students need to submit a portfolio of their best writing samples.

Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa offers two different writing scholarships.  The first is the Writing Scholarship which awards talented writers $1,000 and up.  To apply, students need to submit a portfolio of their best poetry, non-fiction and essays.  

The second writing scholarship for college students offered at Coe College is the Writing Center Fellowship worth $1,000 per year for up to 4 years.  There are some strings attached.  You need to be a part of the Writing Center for three of the four years.  The Writing Center is simply a group of students who helps out other students improve their writing abilities.

The Alliance for Young Writers and  Artists also rewards talented and creative high school students.  Students can be enrolled in  grades 7-12 in any public, private, parochial, home-school or after school program to be eligible.  You must submit work in the categories of non-fiction, poetry, journalism, dramatic poetry, among others.  About 30,000 students will receive regional awards for their submissions out of the expected 100,000 students who will take part in the challenge and roughly 1000 students will earn national awards.
